Good Hotel Guide – 2006

Looe Hotels - The Good Hotel Guide 2006 - Barclay House Looe“We felt right from the moment we walked in,” says a visitor in 2005.

An informal Texan style prevails this small hotel and restaurant, a former Victorian merchant’s house on a hillside above this historic fishing town. He grew up in Devon, but ran a restaurant in Dallas for 18 years before returning to the West Country with his American wife Kelli, and their three children.

Much work on the house this year: The restaurant has been given a more contemporary look, with a wood floor, sandstone walls and new lighting; all bathrooms have been modernised too, and given new tiling, fixtures and fittings (backlit mirrors); there is new furniture in the bedrooms. “Our room was large and bright with a view over the river”…………..

Chef Proprietor Nick Barclay has won successive Taste of the West Gold awards (3 years running) for his modern British coastal cuisine using fish from Looe harbour (ten minutes walk away) and other Cornish produce.

Drinks and lunch can be served on the panoramic terrace and the wine list has local Camel Valley wines and a page of half bottles.
